Roots of Change
Roots of Change (ROC) believes that the best way to make the food system sustainable is to connect and support the people and parts within the system that have the knowledge, roles, relationships and commitments required to successfully manage a rapid transformation.
ROC seeks to popularize a broad set of values; promote more holistic thinking and system science; and attract resources to organize and implement large-scale projects and initiatives that transform the system. ROC believes the resulting food and agriculture system will be better than the one that currently exists. The improved system will be more:
- Healthy, nutritious, and delicious because it will focus on producing the highest quality as well as affordable food.
- Equitable because its benefits and wealth creation will be more available to all workers, communities, and income groups.
- Beneficial to future generations because it will not degrade the soil, water, species diversity, and climate upon which food production depends.
- Decentralized and thus less vulnerable to contamination, terrorism, and climate change.
ROC's core competency is the attraction and investment of resources to support new and veteran organizations and working groups that implement a specific plan for transforming the food system in the state. This plan is called California’s Campaign for a New Mainstream in Food, Farming & Fisheries.
