Global Cool Cities Alliance
The Global Cool Cities Alliance is dedicated to increasing the solar reflectance of our buildings and pavements as a low- or no-cost way to fight the effects of climate change and to promote cool cities and buildings.
The age-old technology of painting buildings white to cool them is based on the concept of reflectivity, or albedo.
Albedo is the scientific term for how reflective a surface is. The higher the albedo, the more the surface reflects light instead of absorbing it.
Increasing the albedo of our building and paved surfaces can substantially reduce the amount of heat trapped under the earth's atmosphere. White, and other highly reflective roofs are an effective tool to help alleviate some of the stress caused by rising global temperatures. Cities around the world are starting to take advantage of this low cost, no regrets way to help cool our buildings, cities, and planet.
The Global Cool Cities Alliance provides tools, information, best practices and technical assistance to a network of municipal governments, building code developers, policy makers, and building operators around the world who are interested in harnessing the benefits of cool surfaces.
